This three-hour workshop will present the institutional strategy of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University (UJEP) for integrating sustainability across its core functions: governance, campus operations, and education. The workshop will provide an in-depth look at the university’s approach to developing a whole-institution sustainability strategy and will offer examples of how these efforts are linked to broader regional and European transformation agendas.
The first part of the workshop will focus on UJEP’s involvement in the national project UNILEAD (University Leaders in SDGs), which aimed to support Czech universities in aligning their development with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Drawing on this project, UJEP has developed and implemented a set of institutional tools and processes that support the long-term integration of sustainability into university management and academic practice.

A significant portion of the workshop will be dedicated to the educational dimension of sustainability. UJEP has prioritized the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into its teaching and learning activities, with pilot initiatives in teacher education, environmental science, and interdisciplinary modules. The workshop will present case studies of curriculum innovations, capacity-building efforts for academic staff, and strategies for linking teaching with community engagement and regional challenges.
In the second part of the session, attention will shift to UJEP’s role in European projects that focus on the sustainable transformation of post-industrial regions. Through its involvement in initiatives such as Just Transition, the university is contributing to the development of regional innovation ecosystems that aim to foster inclusive, sustainable, and place-based development. These projects emphasize the role of universities not only as educational institutions but also as facilitators of regional dialogue, knowledge co-creation, and social innovation.
The workshop will explore how sustainability strategies at the institutional level can be aligned with these broader missions, and how international collaboration can support systemic change in higher education and beyond. Participants will discuss the opportunities and constraints that arise when connecting academic transformation with regional development agendas, particularly in structurally disadvantaged or post-industrial areas.

The workshop is designed to be interactive, offering space for participants to reflect on their own institutional contexts, share experiences, and identify possible adaptations of the practices presented. By the end of the session, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of how sustainability can be advanced across university structures and in partnership with regional and international actors.

This session is intended for academic leaders, sustainability coordinators, educators, and researchers who are engaged in institutional development and interested in strengthening the role of higher education in sustainable and just transitions.
