Are you curious about how mindfulness, growth mindset, and anxiety influence teaching and learning in higher education? This engaging and practical session invites university instructors, faculty, and academic support professionals to explore how intentional mindfulness strategies can transform the classroom experience—for both students and educators.
Led by Dr. Janet Tassell, this session draws from her international research and professional development work, including a Fulbright-funded webinar titled Well-being in Teaching, which supported educators in navigating the emotional and cognitive demands of the classroom. Building on that foundation, this session brings those insights into the university setting, offering tools and strategies tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of higher education.
Participants will explore how mindfulness can be used to:
- Improve students' focus and awareness through simple, research-based techniques that can be seamlessly integrated into daily instruction.
- Monitor and respond to students' needs with greater empathy and insight, using mindfulness as a lens for understanding classroom dynamics and individual challenges.
- Reduce stress in the classroom by fostering a culture of calm, intentionality, and psychological safety—where students feel supported and empowered to take academic risks.
- Support healthy relationships at work, recognizing that faculty well-being and interpersonal dynamics play a critical role in student success and institutional climate.
- Foster overall well-being by incorporating reflective practices that encourage balance, emotional regulation, and self-awareness for both students and educators.
This session will provide a practical toolkit of strategies that participants can immediately apply in their own teaching. These include breathing exercises, mindful pauses, journaling prompts, and mindset reframing techniques—all designed to enhance student engagement and reduce academic anxiety. The session will also explore how these practices can be adapted across disciplines and learning environments, including for students with high performance pressure or those struggling with confidence in their academic abilities.
Dr. Tassell will share insights from her international seminars and professional development sessions across Europe, including presentations in the United States, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and the Netherlands. These experiences have shaped her approach to integrating mindfulness into education and offer a global perspective on how well-being and academic rigor can coexist.
Whether you're new to mindfulness or looking to deepen your practice, this session offers a supportive space to reflect, learn, and grow. Join us to discover how small shifts in teaching practice can lead to big changes in student outcomes—and how centering the mind can strengthen the entire learning experience.
