In today's university classroom, engagement goes beyond participation—it's about cultivating a learning environment where students feel intellectually challenged, emotionally supported, and motivated to grow. Engage to Elevate is a hands-on session designed to help faculty and instructors implement active learning strategies that not only spark curiosity and deepen understanding but also foster a productive and inclusive classroom culture. Active learning shifts the focus from passive reception to active involvement. It encourages students to think critically, collaborate meaningfully, and take ownership of their learning. However, true engagement is not accidental—it's the result of intentional design and a teaching philosophy that prioritizes empathy, inclusion, and trust.

This session explores how to create "minds-on" learning experiences that are rigorous, responsive, and rooted in a culture of respect. Participants will learn how to structure lessons that invite interaction, use questioning techniques that promote deeper thinking, and incorporate movement, discussion, and reflection across disciplines and class sizes.

Central to this approach is the pedagogy of kindness—a mindset that values compassion and understanding without compromising academic rigor. A kind classroom is one where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and persist through challenges. When students trust their learning environment, they are more likely to engage meaningfully and contribute to a thriving academic community.

Participants will also explore how to:

  • Build trust and psychological safety in the classroom
  • Use formative feedback to guide learning and foster growth
  • Respond to disengagement with empathy and flexibility
  • Balance content coverage with opportunities for interaction
  • Leverage technology to support—not distract from—active learning

Through real examples, collaborative discussion, and practical demonstrations, attendees will leave with a toolkit of strategies to enhance student engagement and build a classroom culture where both minds and hearts are activated. Whether you're new to active learning or looking to refresh your approach, this session offers inspiration and practical guidance to elevate your teaching and empower your students.
