Enhancing the engagement of university students in online learning

In this workshop, participants will learn about how student engagement in asynchronous online learning can be increased in various disciplines of higher education. We will discuss the key characteristics of effective online courses that ensure effective learning, increase motivation and foster collaboration among peers. We will start by focussing on the affordances of online learning environment and then consider possible ways of structuring and organizing an online course. I will then showcase a variety of learning tasks that I have successfully used in postgraduate and massive open online learning courses. Finally, we will reflect on the teachers’ role and ways of providing feedback to scaffold learning in online learning.

Target group: all higher education teachers and colleagues, but mostly targeted for lecturers in humanities, social sciences and education. No prior knowledge required.
